Shree Cement Commissions 6 MW Solar Plant In Roorkee, Uttarakhand To Boost Green Energy Goals

Shree Cement Ltd., one of India’s leading cement manufacturers, has commissioned a new 6.0 MWp solar power plant at its Roorkee unit in Uttarakhand. The plant has been strategically set up adjacent to the company’s existing cement operations, marking another important step in its journey towards renewable energy adoption and carbon footprint reduction. With the addition of this new solar facility, the total solar power capacity at the Roorkee site has increased from 1.0 MWp to 7.0 MWp, representing a sevenfold growth.

This significant expansion aligns with the company’s broader sustainability goals and its commitment to the global RE100 initiative, which aims for 100% renewable energy sourcing. Shree Cement’s overall solar capacity across all its locations has now reached 293.5 MWp, strengthening its position as a leader in sustainable manufacturing within the Indian cement industry.

Neeraj Akhoury, Managing Director, Shree Cement, said in a statement, “Sustainability is embedded in everything we do. The commissioning of the Roorkee solar plant is a testament to our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and building long-term energy resilience. Projects like this not only benefit the environment but also create local jobs and contribute to inclusive economic growth.”

Developed with a capital investment of approximately ₹16 crore, the solar power plant is expected to substantially reduce dependence on grid electricity. It is also projected to offset nearly 6,500 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually, making a measurable contribution to climate action efforts. This development not only supports Shree Cement’s long-term vision of achieving energy self-sufficiency but also reflects its continued focus on integrating clean energy solutions into its core operations for a more sustainable future.
